You Are Not Alone

Some things happened yesterday while I was practicing all of my rebellious apocalyptic antics. Terrifying things, then hilarious things, then sheer miraculous things. The world gave me what I assumed were three parting gifts.

Gift #1

I could have used my words to describe this present. I could have eloquently explained the horror upon horror I stepped in found awaiting me around every corner of my apartment yesterday. But instead, I took photos of it for you.

cat puke

Casts love to get high on ipecac.

Why would this happen? Why would Ace or Jack or both of them have a vomit marathon? I wanted to be furious. I wanted to stop gagging. I wanted to quit cleaning it up. After all, the world was supposed to end, so  I thought, “what’s the point”. That’s when I realized it. The felines must have read my post from yesterday and decided to give all of their fucks away… on every surface of my apartment. It was my own fault.

Gift # 2

Once I successfully scraped up all of that plastered puke, I needed to get out in the fresh air and find dinner. But, the first step to anything is checking Facebook. So that is what I did. There he was. Le Clown again, being all savior like. He successfully saved me from my kitty bile induced melancholy with one of his masterly constructed and equally hilarious secular Xmas cards.

Someone bring me a Zippo. HURRY.

If cancer isn’t real, then where did all that Movember money go? Busted, Le Clown! I know you used that nice chunk of change to stock up on Astroglide. Alas, I can never stay mad at you. Thank you for being you, Jesus Clown Super Star On Fire.

Gift # 3

Let’s be serious for a minute, because this last gift seriously had me choking up. I was alone last night. I was alone for the end of the world, and although I knew in full faith that the world was not ending today, I couldn’t help but think about how sad it would be if it were true. I was alone for the end of the world. So I went to a restaurant bar to eat and sit in silence with other lonely people. Then this happened.

26 acts if kindness

Are you crying yet?

The woman who was giving these out simple tapped me on the shoulder and said, “You don’t know me, but Merry Christmas” and went on her way. I no longer felt alone at the end of the world.

The text on the insert reads: “26 Acts if Kindness in honor of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting victims. You are recipient 2. In honor of Daniel. [All 26 victims'  names are listed] The extra sheet given to you is so that you can photocopy it and keep the 26 Acts of Kindness going in their honor. Share what was done for you and/or what you have done for others on Twitter #26acts or on Facebook“.

Sharing this here is how I am paying it forward. I also plan to hand a few of these out myself, and I encourage you to help me keep the kindness going. You don’t have to use the cards. Just act kind at random. Surprise someone. Make someone feel like they are not alone. Reblog, tweet, do what you do.

I also want to personally tell the gorgeous Anka from Keeping It Real that I think she wrote a lovely post regarding the shooting tragedy and our responsibility to observe it properly as bloggers. Anka, maybe you don’t have to write about it. Maybe none of us have to write about it. Maybe we can remedy our grief by spreading random acts of kindness to overshadow the random acts of hate and violence.

I planned to announce this week’s comment winners today, but then these events happened, and I don’t want to take away from this incredible idea. I will be posting comment winners this weekend before Christmas falls. Go forth and be kind.

P.S. You should also go check out the winners of Jules and the Byronic Man’s Holy Sheet giveaway. Spoiler: I didn’t win, but I was a runner up. Peace.

  1. I’ve seen the 26 Acts page on facebook and I think I’ve liked it. It’s a really good idea, a positive response to the horrific events, and I reckon if more people can get on and do lots of little, positive things where they live, we might end up in a better world.

That may be wishful thinking on my part, but I can always hope and pray, right?

  2. Cat puke and loneliness? I’ve been there – and how!
Hang in there, you’re young, cute and full of moxie… You’ll be all right.
And you give out so much love and kindness, you’re do for some major karmic justice very soon…
Enjoy it when it hits, Becca!

  3. Becca,

I have nominated you to received a star for the Blog of the Year 2012 Award.

    http://thebottomofabottle.wordpress.com/2012/12/22/another-the-bottom-of-a-bottle-awards-ceremony/

Thank you so much for all your support over the last few months.
    Forever grateful,
    Wayne

  4. Sheesh your cats vomit could be found easily in the dark at least! Love a Random Act of Kindness for whatever reason. You have inspired me! I shall go forth and act random. In a kind way.

  5. Cats just love to puke, don’t they? It’s they’re way of saying, “Guess what? Fuck you!”

I loved #3, and I am TOTALLY gonna do it.

    • Basically Jen. Fucking cats. Cuteness is their ticket in the door, because if they weren’t just adorable as shit, no one would keep them as pets simply for their personalities.

  6. What a great post Becca. Full of love, and cat puke.
The world will never end and you will never be alone.

  7. Number three touched my heart!

  8. What a wonderful feeling, and a great thing to happen to you! Glad you got a “you’re not alone on the last night on Earth (but not really last night on Earth)” moment!

  9. Becca, this is wonderful! I am inspired. And, not by the cat puke…hate when that happens.

  10. That inspired me even more to be extra nice to people.
And by “that” I mean the cat bile.

  11. Are you feeding your cats a steady diet of yellow starbursts? That’s some nuclear neon puke.

  12. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for this, Becca! What a way to pay it forward! Hope your message of random acts of kindness spreads like a wildfire. Even if it’s just one person, one smile at a time. I am certainly grinning ear to ear after reading this post. Finishing as a runner up in the Go Jules Go holiday contest was another bright spot in my day. Love me some bacon!

    • What can I say, I have grown very fond of you. I am happy that this made you smile even if you were the only one.

Your card was my favorite. Bacon is the candy of meats. You can’t go wrong there!

  13. That is one of the best stories I’ve heard in quite some time. That woman is awesome.

Also, you’re not alone. You have all of us, we’re just not near enough to knock on your door. We do have Skype, though. :)

  14. You have a purple couch?! How AWESOME!

Great card, I am still awaiting one from Le Clown.

Those little moments always cheer me up. So glad you don’t feel alone anymore :) I love doing little things to brighten up people’s day, it definitely makes me feel amazing as well.

  15. Off to check out the 26 acts…
Oh, and get a dog. He’ll clean up the cat puke.

      • Not as gross as dogs cleaning up their own puke.
But hey, we have EIGHT dogs, and the other morning I came into my office (which is also the sleeping quarters for 6 of them), and I was met with one pool of diarrhea, five piles of poop(many smeared across the floor), 4 puddles of pee, and even doggie poop on the wall. How they did the wall-thing is beyond me.
Talk about awesome and gross! And apparently projectile!
I think I could turn the above list into a “Twelve Days of Christmas” song.

        • The wall thing is understandable. Animals defy gravity when we aren’t looking, and sometimes if you are really lucky, when we are looking. Sorry about the projectile thing though. I feel your pain.

Amazing how much bodily fluids (and solids) can come from such small creatures.

  16. Thank you for sharing that touching and caring moment. I think it’s important that we continue to pay it forward.
The world could be a little nicer and kinder place, no doubt, especially if everyone also spontaneously stopped smoking. Good luck with that one.

  17. Wow. I’d already decided a couple months ago that I needed to look for specific opportunities to do little good things for others throughout the day, and then promptly failed miserably at executing. I’m gonna go look for that. Thanks.

  18. ok, two things. no three.

    1. once when my cat puked on the floor and i stepped in it, i got so mad i was just seconds away from eating pasta and vodka sauce and then making myself puke in the cat’s food bowl. you know when people say “you only live once” and “don’t live regret”? i sooo regret that i didn’t do it.

    2. so the woman gave some money, and the way you’re paying it forward is by telling us that a woman gave you money? isn’t this the part when you say “bah. humbug”? or maybe i read it wrong. i probably did but i’m too lazy to scroll up.

    3. this morning i made butter cookies in the shape of christmas trees, green food coloring, and multi-colored sprinkles. now just waiting for the dog to puke on the floor…

  19. Becca,
As long as my secular XMAS card encouraged you to smoke more. That is all Le Clown wants, as he is magnanimous™.
    Le Clown
