The Insightful Grad Gift
A page from Oh, the Places You’ll Go by Dr. Seuss
Upon pondering how I could introduce a bit more about myself in my second post without bombarding anyone with a full on autobiography full of rambling, I came across the above photo in my Iphone album. This book was sent to me by my Aunt Bambi as a congratulatory gift for graduating college in 2010. I actually forgot why I had even taken this picture until I read the selected quote. It made me smile to realize, even when I had no clue what I was going to do or what I wanted, I at least knew I wanted to get out there.. way out there. It also served as a decent intro for what I wanted to write about today as well. That’ll do pic, that’ll do.
I find it amazing how the context in my mind of things like this changed over time. Reading this as a child I probably thought, “I can’t read any of those words. Where are the pictures?”.
If I were to have read this as a teenager my thought process might have been a little more like, “How the hell did he come up with those names” or, “Good rhyme bro”.
Fast forward to me at 22. I was still reading this as a child. This time, I was in a new place where I was a child of adulthood. Just a little bit of an oxymoron there. So then I thought, “Who would of guessed that a book designed for a child could have such deeper meaning, could relate to my life and my desires to travel. It is so simplistic, yet so significant”. Okay, okay, to be realistic with the wording of my inner monologue, it was closer to, “Ah, I see what my aunt did here. Mind equals blown! That’s pretty cool”.
So, a few things can be learned about me here. I have an Aunt named after a Disney character. I say things like “bro” sometimes. I graduated with a business degree in Marketing in December of 2010 with no clue where I was going, but that I wanted to go somewhere. The story of this moment is where it all started I think.
I now keep this book on my desk at home as filler decoration (i’m too cheap to buy home decor that was made to be home decor), but more importantly I keep it out as another reminder and assurance that I can make things happen. I admit that was a bit reading rainbow of me, but I truly do use a Dr. Seuss book as inspiration. I stand proud. And, if you get nothing else out of this post, at least you can use the gift idea for someone in the future, take full credit for the idea, and pretend you are clever and deep and shit. I give my full permission.
